MINI-GUIDE

Classic changing mat or foam changing mat?

Are you setting up a baby changing area? And are you unsure whether to choose a textile-covered changing mat or a modern moulded foam changing mat?

We’ve put together a quick and easy mini-guide to walk you through the key differences (and similarities) so you can find the perfect fit for you and your little one.

The classic changing mat

The classic changing mat has been on the market for many years, and is typically made of a foam material with a textile cover. The textile cover often features a surface treatment that makes it easy to wipe clean – and you can simply remove it for washing.

The foam material in the changing mat tends to flatten over time. After multiple nappy changes, the foam cushion can lose its original shape and look a little deflated.

Modern changing mats are made of solid-coloured, moulded PUR foam for optimal comfort. This unique material feels soft and cosy for your baby to lie on and is 100% waterproof to prevent accidents from soaking into the changing mat. This makes the PUR changing mat extra hygienic and easy to keep clean.

Thanks to the waterproof surface, your moulded changing mat is easy to rinse off under the tap, or even use on the floor of the shower if you prefer to bathe your baby there.

PUR foam is a highly durable material that retains its shape and appearance, nappy change after nappy change.

Material

Comparison of Changing Mats

Material

Changing mat in moulded foam

✓ Soft and cosy foam material.

✓ Easy to wipe clean and 100% waterproof.

✓ Durable and long-lasting – year after year.

The classic changing mat

✓ Soft foam material with textile cover.

✓ The cover is usually removable and washable.

✓ Loses firmness and shape over time.

Trend

Over the past 5 years, sales of the moulded PUR foam changing mats have been growing steadily, overtaking traditional fabric-covered changing mats.

We know that parents-to-be want optimum comfort, great design and high quality that can last several children. This is what you get with a changing mat made of moulded PUR foam.

Moulded foam changing mats are easy to clean with soap and water. They can usually handle disinfectant spray, just make sure the detergent contains less than 70% alcohol.

The water-repellent surface is easy to rinse off under the tap to quickly clean up those little accidents. That's one of the biggest reasons for choosing a PUR foam changing mat – it simply makes life easier for you as a parent.

The classic changing mat

If you choose a changing mat with a textile cover, you can easily wipe the surface clean. And if the cover is surface-treated, spills like pee won’t soak into the foam as long as you wipe it off quickly. For those bigger accidents, you will have to remove the cover and wash it in the washing machine.

Cleaning

Comparison of Changing Mats

CLEANING

Changing mat in moulded foam

✓ Easy cleaning with soap and water.

✓ Generally tolerates disinfectants containing alcohol.

✓ Easy to rinse off under the tap.

The classic changing mat

✓ Surface-treated for easy wiping.

✓ Cover is usually removable and washable at 30 degrees.

✓ The surface treatment loses its effect over time.

How much does a changing mat cost?

A traditional changing mat with a fabric cover typically costs between 20-60 EUR. Some manufacturers also offer replacement covers – perfect if you want to switch up the colour or if the surface treatment has worn off after multiple machine washes.

If you'd rather have a moulded changing mat, these are available from between 60-130 EUR. The cheapest ones are often made in China and have a slightly plastic-like surface. Changing mats made in Europe tend to be of a more exclusive quality with a surface that feels cosy and comfortable for your baby to lie on.

Moulded foam changing mats feature a modern, minimalist look with soft lines and a simple design. They tend to come in muted colours to match the Nordic style of decor.

The PUR cushions have high edges that prevent your child from bumping themselves on their surroundings when rolling around during nappy changes. The edges also help prevent your child from rolling off the mat.

The classic changing mat

Changing mat covers are available in multiple colours and patterns, giving you the opportunity to choose a design that matches your decor.

Classic changing mats usually have lower edges than moulded ones, which means your baby is more exposed on the surface. These mats tend to slide more on slippery surfaces as they don't always have a non-slip base.

Design & Safety

Comparison of Changing Mats

DESIGN & SAFETY

Changing mat in moulded foam

✓ PUR foam lies firmly and securely on even surfaces.

✓ High edges protect your baby.

✓ Available in solid colours in a range of subtle shades.

The classic changing mat

✓ The mat is easy to move around.

✓ The recess in the centre of the mat makes the part where the baby lies feel thin.

✓ The cover is available in a wide choice of colours and patterns.

Classic changing mat or foam changing mat – what's the right choice for you?

Both options have their strengths, so it depends on your family's needs and daily routines.

The foam changing mat, made from moulded PUR foam, is soft, water-resistant, and easy to wipe clean. It's a hygienic and durable solution that keeps its shape over time – ideal if you're after something practical that stands up to everyday use.

The classic changing mat with a textile cover offers a cosy, soft surface and the option to wash the cover as needed. It may show more wear over time, but it's a budget-friendly alternative to the foam version.

In the end, it's all about what matters most to you – easy maintenance, long-term durability or overall cost.
